A 29-year-old woman from Karurumo Village in Embu County is reeling from shock after her family members and friends abandoned her at an Embu hospital due to a large medical bill.
The patient, Monica Wanja, was admitted to Joykim Nursing Hospital in May, 2017 after she suffered a prolapsed disc.
Doctors have recommended that Ms Wanja should undergo a prolapsed disc surgery to eliminate the herniated portion. The surgical operation costs Ksh665, 000.
When her family members learnt of the amount of money needed for Wanja’s surgery, they abandoned her, with some even refusing to receive her calls, claims Wanja.
According to Wanja, a severe tuberculosis resulted into the dislocation of her two backbone discs, causing her crippling pain.
Wanja is in dire need of a surgery to repair the two discs, so that she regains her ability to walk.
The mother-of-two claims her husband, other family members and friends abandoned her after the cost of a surgical operation was made known to them.
Efforts to reach them via phone have been futile, says Wanja.
Purity Kangai, an administrator at Joykim Nursing Hospital, says Wanja was admitted to the facility after a doctor at the health centre made the request, saying he “needed to monitor her closely”, even as Wanja’s family members were raising funds for her treatment.
Kangai has urged well-wishers to come to Wanja’s rescue, promising to continue accommodating her at the health facility.
