Woman, 22, kills herself in MCA’s house, leaves behind suicide note and husband’s phone number

A 22-year-old woman from Kisumu County committed suicide on Tuesday afternoon (May 30) over what she termed, in a suicide note, increased infidelity by her husband.

The woman, identified as Mary Akinyi, hanged herself from a rafter of a house in Manyatta B belonging to area Member of County Assembly (MCA), Nerea Okombo. The MCA’s house was still under construction.

Akinyi and her husband moved into the neighborhood a few days ago, neighbours said.

Akinyi, a mother of one, who neighbours describe as a lively person, took her own life over suspicion that her husband was having a secret affair with another woman in the neighborhood.

Confirming the incident, Kisumu County Police Commander, Titus Yoma, said Akinyi attributed her decision to her husband. Yoma added that the mother of one left, on the note, her husband’s cell phone number.

“Akinyi left a note, saying she committed suicide because of her husband. We will look for the husband to record a statement and thereafter, we will launch investigations to ascertain what exactly happened,” said Yoma.

MCA Okombo urged the police to expedite investigations into the matter so as to do away with neighbour’s speculations which would arise as to why Akinyi chose the MCA’s house as the venue for suicide.

“The woman left her home at 8am today, leaving her baby behind. It is like the husband did not know where she was. He, too, left to go look for her. I was called at around 11am by the neighbours. Rushing to my home, I found she had hanged herself. I am yet to find out her identity. I do not even know the husband,” said MCA Okombo.

The woman’s body was taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
