Controversial Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) Chairman Babu Owino has openly opposed the predominant African practice of paying a bride price, saying it commodifies women.
Speaking exclusively to EDAILY, Babu Owino said a wife – who in most instances is a classical product of love – should be handed, by her parents or guardian, to a deserving man “for free”.
“Why would I buy a wife? Love should be for free. A woman is not a property and does not have a price tag at the back. I do not advocate for paying of dowry but I advocate for appreciation,” Babu Owino said.
However, Babu Owino, a husband and father of two, said he paid bride price for his wife because he wanted to “appreciate” the role his partner’s parents had played in raising her up.
