Why women were locked out of KDF recruitment in Nanyuki

More than 90 women who had turned up for the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment in Nanyuki were locked out from the exercise, with officials saying they were only looking for male recruits.

The 90 plus women who had made their way to Nanyuki Stadium for the recruitment were forced to return to their homes after it became imminent that they were not going to be allowed to try their luck in the exercise.

Head of the KDF recruitment in Nanyuki, Lt. Colonel Samuel Mayenga, said 500 youth turned up for the exercise.

Colonel Mayenga says the drive targets to recruit three officers from Daiga (one) and Central Laikipia (two) divisions in Laikipia East Sub County.

He defended the move by KDF recruitment officials in Nanyuki to exclude female potential recruits from the exercise, saying that their plan was to recruit male officers only.

“We pick women based on how we had planned. According to plans that we had for Laikipia East sub County, we were only going to pick men in the recruitment. There are some sub counties where we will pick women and there are those that we won’t; solely based on pre-arrangements,” said Colonel Mayenga.

The KDF recruitment exercise that targets 3000 recruits kicked off countrywide on Monday, May 15, and is slated to end on June 14.
