Why R&B star Keri Hilson cried during press briefing at KICC – VIDEO

Visiting American R&B singer, Keri Hilson, on Thursday, August 2 broke down while talking about her struggles with depression.

Her condition was so dire that it saw her take a break from music.

Keri Hilson made the revelation during a press conference at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) ahead of her concert, Terminal Weekend, slated for August 3 and 4 at the same venue.

The “Energy” hit-maker revealed that it took time for her to regain her happiness and mental stability, given she is operating in a high-pressure industry – entertainment.

Following her triumph over depression, Keri Hilson says she has resorted, as a mental health advocate, to helping people who are dealing with similar problems.

“I had to take a break [from music] for a while to soul-search and find my happiness. That is exactly what I did, it took longer than I expected, but I am grateful that I found my way out. I just want to be a voice and be a beacon of light to those who are going through mental disorders or mental health issues,” she said.

Despite her struggles, Keri Hilson lifted her chin up and hit the studios, not for herself but her fans, she said.

She is a staunch believer of music that “inspires” and not music that “paints me perfect.”

Keri Hilson took the opportunity to urge persons undergoing depression to speak out, so as “to find truth and honesty through pain”.

“It is really important to express yourself. That is what it is meant for, that honesty, that truth and that pain. I remember a lot of days I was just unable to step into the studio, but I kept pushing. During that time, I made some of my best music ever. I am here to inspire people. I am not here to make music that paints me perfect,” she said.

According to Keri Hilson, there’s always room to bounce back bigger, bolder and better after an episode of depression.

“Take the time you need to find yourself and come back even better!” Keri Hilson said.
