Police officers attached to the Kenya Ferry Services in Likoni, Mombasa County fired gun shots into the air early Thursday to restore order among passengers, who were scrambling to gain access into the only operational ferry after another had broken down.

A replacement was sent to ferry passengers, who were aboard MV Likoni, which broke down in the middle of the ocean.

Passengers on both ends of the sea, who were waiting for the only operational ferry, MV Nyayo, became restless every time they saw it approaching the shore, consequently causing commotion.

“Had we not fired shots into the air, the situation could have gotten out of hand, passengers could have been injured,” said one of the security officers attached to the Kenya Ferry Services.

Another ferry, MV Harambee, was brought to ease movement of people between mainland and Mombasa Island.

The government had acquired a new ferry, MV Jambo, which is yet to begin transporting passengers. MV Jambo only transports vehicles between the mainland and Mombasa Island.
