Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has pleaded with Kenyans to oppose the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) through the Nairobi National Park.
The Hollywood star took to her official Facebook page on Friday, November 25, to urge Kenyans to join hands and write to the Director General of National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to express their concerns about the planned project.
“We as Kenyans are so fortunate to be the custodians of a large biodiversity that exists in our national parks. And we also boast having the only capital city in the world to have a national park within it, a major tourist attraction.
“But The Nairobi National Park is being threatened: there are plans to build a new railroad through it. Though we do need a new railway system, this plan is not the only solution available. If you, like me, care to preserve our wildlife and our natural reserves, write to the Director General of NEMA ([email protected]) and express your concern that this sets an unacceptable precedent for Kenya’s parks and reserves.
“Urge them to construct around the park, not through it! #ProgressNotDistress. Please copy your letter to [email protected],” Lupita wrote.
Lupita Nyong’o, a wildlife conservationist, in June 30 announced that she will advocate globally for elephants with international conservation organization WildAid, as well as promote women’s issues, acting and the arts in Kenya.
“I want to encourage people all over the world to learn more about these incredible animals,” Lupita Nyong’o said.
Lupita Nyong’o joins a list of those opposing the SGR construction through the park after over 50 environmental conservationists held peaceful demonstrations in Langata on September 16, over the project.
