Why Lupita Nyong’o is making Prof Nyongo a very proud dad


Hollywood actress Lupita Nyong’o has been nominated in the category of Leading Actress in a Play in 2016 Tony Awards.

The nominees for the Tony Awards were announced on Tuesday, May 3. Some of the biggest Broadway stars and Hollywood celebrities got nods this year.

Lupita was recognised for her outstanding performance in Eclipsed – a play about the Liberian civil war. She competes against Jessica Lange, Laurie Metcalfe, Sophie Okonedo and Michelle Williams.

Eclipsed follows the lives of five African women held captive as sex slaves of a Liberian general. Lupita plays the role of one of these wives.

Eclipsed is the first play on Broadway to have an all-woman cast, as well as a female writer and director.

Lupita Nyong’o shot to global fame in March, 2014 when she won an Oscar for her role as Patsey, a slave girl in Steve McQueen’s historical drama 12 Years a Slave.

Lupita has also appeared in the latest installment of the mega movie franchise, Star Wars, where she played a 1,000-year-old alien called Maz Kanata.

The Tony Awards are considered United States’ most prestigious theatre awards. The gala ceremony this year will be held on June 12.

Hamilton which has since moved to Broadway broke the record for most Tony nominations ever – 16.
