A Tanzanian man broke onto the pitch when English Premier League side, Everton FC, was playing Kenya Premier League leaders Gor Mahia in a friendly match in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, July 13.
The man ran from the stands; onto the pitch and forced a hug on former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney before security officers swiftly swung into action and whisked him away, as Wayne Rooney was still reeling from the shock of the incident.
Everton FC beat Gor Mahia 2 goals to 1 in the thrilling football match.
The football fan was arrested but later released after the Tanzanian Minister for Sports, Harrison Mwakyembe, ordered he be freed.
“Those are normal things; they do happen. The guy was only excited to see Rooney. He knew too well that he was not going to get an opportunity of taking a picture with him. So, the only option that was left for him was to run from the stands and hug Rooney before returning to the stands. But let me say it is the Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan who asked me to order the football fan’s release,” said Mwakyembe during an interview with Global Publishers.
