Veteran Nigerian actress Zainab Bukky Ajayi is dead aged 82.
Bukky Ajayi’s son Kunle Fawole, alias Abounce, confirmed the death of the actress to Nigerian website TNS on Wednesday, July 6.
“Mummy passed away about 30 minutes ago. God knows best,” said Kunle, who is a rapper and actor.
According to TNS, Bukky succumbed to heart-related complications which she had been battling for long.
She passed on at her Surulere residence in Lagos.
Before her death, she requested her family for an immediate burial; therefore she was laid to rest at 4pm on Wednesday, July 6 at Atan Cemetery.
Bukky Ajayi was widely respected in and beyond Nollywood for her acting ingenuity.
On June 15, 2016, a group of Nollywood film stars visited the legendary actress at her home.
The actors included Joke Silva, Uzor Osimkpa, Chika Chukwu, Rita Dominic, Kate Henshaw, Nichole Banna, Seun Ajayi and Zara Udofia Ejoh.
Joke Silva shared a photo with the caption: “TAA (The Actors Advocate) with the gorgeous unassuming super talented Mama Bukky Ajayi. We went down memory lane…We laughed…We cried we prayed.”
On Saturday, March 5, 2016 at the fourth edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, Bukky received an “Industry Merit Award.”
A standing ovation greeted the announcement of the octogenarian, who was wheeled to the stage to receive her award. That was to be her last public outing.
She was born into a Christian family, but she converted to Islam in the early eighties and chose the name Zainab. Her love for theatre started when she was little; her father used to take her to the cinemas. Bukky studied in England where she served as Federal Government scholar for six years before returning to Nigeria.
