Tanzanian singer Sam wa Ukweli succumbed to acute malaria and a urinary tract infection (UTI) on Wednesday night, his younger brother says.
Sam’s younger brother, whose name wasn’t revealed, told Tanzania’s Bongo5.com that he was disappointed by Sam’s producer, Steve, who claimed that the late artiste had revealed to him that he [Sam] was suffering from HIV/AIDS “acquired through witchcraft”.
“I want to confirm that my brother succumbed to acute malaria and UTI. He had battled the conditions for long before his demise. At the hospital, where he had been rushed, doctors said it was malaria, which killed him.
“We have been shocked by Steve’s claim that my brother was an HIV carrier. Sam hadn’t told us that [he was HIV (positive)]. I think Steve owed us a duty of care during this difficult time, and he shouldn’t have made that insensitive comment,” said Sam’s younger brother.
Sam wa Ukweli was overwhelmed, when he was in studio and rushed to Palestina Hospital in Dar es Salaam, where he was pronounced dead.
Sam wa Ukweli will be buried on Friday, June 8 in Bagamoyo, Singida, according to Islamic customs.
The “Sina Raha” star is survived by a wife and a daughter called Betty.
“Sina Raha”, “Hata kwetu wapo” “Kisiki”and “Milele” were among the singer’s popular music projects.
