Laikipia North Member of Parliament (MP) Mathew Lempurkel says he fears for his life after he received a death threat text message on his cell phone on Wednesday night (July 19).

Addressing journalists at a hotel in Maralal town, Samburu County on Thursday, Lempurkel said the sender of the text message, who used an unregistered phone number, texted: “I am coming for your head”.

Lempurkel says he received the message after being spotted accompanying the National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, and his running mate Kalonzo Musyoka for a political rally earlier Wednesday.

“I am urging the government to provide me with extra security during this campaign period. What is happening in Laikipia shows that these people can do anything, given they had recently killed a local chief. The criminals are now targeting area leaders,” said Lempurkel.

Lempurkel says he reached out to acting Interior Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, for help but the CS was reluctant to provide him with extra security.

Lempurkel now wants the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to intervene.

The MP is yet to record a statement with the police.
