Student Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) Chairman Babu Owino was on Wednesday evening arrested and he spent the night at Kilimani Police Post as he waited to be arraigned in court over assault.
Babu Owino allegedly beat up his SONU opponent Mike Jacobs in Kileleshwa, Nairobi in March 20.
Babu was on Thursday morning arraigned at Kibera Law Courts before Principal Magistrate Tito Gesora. He was charged with assault that resulted in grievous bodily harm to Mike Jacobs.
Babu Owino denied the charges. He was released on a cash bail of KSh100, 000 with alternative bond of KSh200, 000.
The case will be mentioned on May 20.
In a March 20 video shared online, Babu together with his friend, seemingly cornered Mike Jacobs near a petrol station and beat him up.
Babu later denied the claims that he assaulted Mike Jacobs and even provided alternative CCTV footage that allegedly showed Mike Jacobs’ group provoking him.
Babu Owino defeated Mike Jacobs in student union elections by garnering 18,000 votes against Jacobs’ 3000 votes.
Mike Jacobs did not accept defeat as he claimed that the April 1 SONU election was marred with irregularities.
The disputed elections resulted in violent protests by University of Nairobi students. The students engaged in street protests and burned SONU offices and Mamlaka hostel.
Mike Jacobs was one of the many students suspended over the riots. He was later expelled.
