Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg, South Africa on Tuesday, October 17 sentenced popular Kwaito musician, Brickz, to 15 years in jail for raping his then-17-year-old niece, South Africa’s Times Live says.
Brickz, born Sipho Ndlovu, committed the crime at his home in Johannesburg in November, 2013.
In his ruling, Magistrate Baloyi detailed testimony from the victim that she was bleeding after the incident as her hymen was broken, as she was a virgin at the time, and was in severe pain.
Baloyi said the victim had been told by Brickz to take a bath after the rape and had threatened to kill her if she reported him to authorities.
He also said the victim was unaware that she had been infected with a sexually transmitted disease.
The woman, who is now 22, said in a statement that she was not coping well after the rape. She claimed to have developed suicidal ideation.
The defense argued for a lenient sentence, but Baloyi said Brickz has not shown remorse for his crime and the court has a duty to protect the freedom of women.
Brickz’s R50 000 (Ksh384, 000) bail was revoked after the conviction.
The singer’s legal team immediately said it would be appealing the conviction as well as the sentence.
