Sarah Pkyach it is! West Pokot shines at Miss Tourism Kenya grand finale

She stood tall, looked charming, sashayed in her traditional knee-length red-and-white beaded dress, wore an infectious smile; with her prodigiously fine white teeth reflecting the flood lights, which were landing rays on her; her shining dark skin left no doubts in mind – that she is indeed the daughter of African soil: Straight from West Pokot.

Sarah Pkyach: An ultimate beauty queen, who everyone – including her competitors – concurred that she deserved walking home with the Miss Tourism crown 2018.

Ms Pkyach, a Third Year Bachelor of Science in Biostatistics student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), takes over from Wendy Bella Omollo, the Homa Bay beauty pearl, who was in possession of the crown since mid 2016.

Sarah Pkyach is also the reigning Miss JKUAT 2018/2019.

In a packed Safari Park Hotel function in Nairobi on Saturday, October 13, Ms Pkyach floored over 40 models pooled from Kenya’s 47 counties, to become the country’s front-woman at the national beauty pageant.

Laikipia representative Yvonne Wangechi, who was championing the pillar of flora and fauna, was crowned the first runner-up, whereas Nairobi’s Mercy Mwiti, who was pushing the peace and unity agenda, took home the second runner-up award.

“I stand here before you all with the dream to motivate all the women and girls in my village that they can stand before people and be counted,” said Sarah Pkyach, triggering a powerful applause from the crowd.

Ms Pkyach later took to Twitter to say “thank you” to everyone, who supported her bid.

“I have never felt this much love and encouragement from my peers and from people I admire; and also from strangers. All your support means a great deal to me,” she said on the micro-blogging site.

Her confident demeanor, commanding presence, articulate expression, and penetrating intelligence won her the crown, judges – led by Film Board boss Dr Ezekiel Mutua – ruled.

And her area Governor Prof. John Lonyangapuo led Kenyans in congratulating Ms Pkyach for a well-deserved victory.

“Congratulations Sarah Pkyach for being crowned the coveted title Miss World Kenya 2018. You have confirmed that indeed West Pokot is ‘The Land of Hidden Treasures’,” tweeted Governor Lonyangapuo.

Counties which produced 13 most beautiful women in the pageant include:  Kericho, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Homa Bay, Meru, Machakos, Wajir, Nairobi, Laikipia, Mombasa and Kilifi.

The event was attended by, among others, Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Chief Administrative Secretary Ababu Namwamba, Narok County First Lady Susan Tunai and the National Director Miss Toursim Kenya Rosemary Kawira.
