Tanzaian Bongo star Diamond Platnumz has come out to congratulate his protégé Rayvanny shortly after the Zezeta star was declared the Best New International Act in Saturday’s BET Viewer’s Choice awards.
Speaking to Millard Ayo, Diamond said that Rayvanny is a double threat because he is both immensely talented and extremely disciplined – traits that the young singer has had even when he was a rookie.
“Rayvanny’s win is a testament to what one can do when they work tirelessly on their craft and embrace discipline. Rayvanny is not new in the Bongo industry, and those who have known him over the years know that he has been patient, hardworking and humble,” said Diamond
Lauding Rayvanny for flying the WCB flag high by winning the coveted award, Diamond said that the Kwetu star has continued to remain humble even as his star has risen with his string of chart-topping hits.
Recalling how the two met in 2015, the King of Bongo said he met Rayvanny when he was a struggling artist. He was moved by Ravvanny’s humility and talent, but he was not able to do much to help as he hadn’t conceptualised the record label idea.
This first meeting was burned in Diamond’s memory, and when he started Wasafi Records, he signed him.
Salome, a song that featured Diamond Platnumz and Rayvanny, catapulted him (Rayvanny) to stardom and later he would drop hit song after hit song.
Diamond says that himself he has tried to win this award but to no avail, and is glad that the award finally found its way to Tanzania through Rayvanny.
The elated musician took to Instagram to thank his fans for their undying support and he had a lot of kind words for Diamond Platnumz.
Rayvanny, who is one of the artists signed to Diamond’s label, said he won because his mentor has sacrificed a lot for him.
Other previous winners of the award are Nigeria’s Folarin Folana and Uganda’s Eddy Kenzo in 2016 and 2015 respectively. Speaking of Eddy Kenzo, the Ghetto Kids, the dance crew made up of kids that featured in Eddy Kenzo’s song Sitya Losa, will be performing during the BET Awards main gala. The kids will be performing alongside singer songwriter French Montana who shot the video for his song Unforgettable in Uganda.
Other notable African winners are Yvonne Chaka Chaka who won the BET Global Good award for her humanitarian effort and Wizkid who won the BET Award for the Best International Act: Africa. Wizkid is set to come to Kenya sometime next month.
