3000 meters steeplechase queen Ruth Jebet flew to her rural home in Kapsabet, Nandi County to a hero’s welcome from family and friends Friday, August 19.

The 19-year-old, who is scheduled to fly to Bahrain on Saturday, August 21 for a major celebration, says she first visited Kenya to celebrate her victory with family.

“I am happy to be back to home. I came to see my parents and I will be going back (to Bahrain) tomorrow (Saturday),” she said.

Ms Jebet’s father, Joel Sitienei, was delighted by his daughter’s decision to participate in athletics for the Asian nation.

“Since she went to Bahrain, she has built me a house, bought me two dairy cows and bought me land. I am happy that I no longer live in a thatched house,” he said.

Family and friends joined Jebet at the Eldoret airport to give her a hero’s welcome.

Jebet won gold in the 3000 meters steeplechase in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Monday.
