Popular Star Wars actress dies


US actress Carrie Fisher, popularly known as Princess Leia in the Star Wars series, has died aged 60, five days after suffering a heart attack, reports the BBC.

A family statement sent to media said with “deep sadness” she died on Tuesday morning.

Fisher was taken ill on a flight from London to Los Angeles on Friday, December 23, and was rushed to UCLA Medical Center when the plane landed.

Fellow actress Anna Akana was on the same flight and she described the heartrending scenes on Twitter.

She wrote: “Don’t know how else to process this but Carrie Fisher stopped breathing on the flight home. Hope she’s gonna be OK.”

According to reports Carrie fell ill 15 minutes before the plane was due to land.

As well as starring in other films such as The Blues Brothers and When Harry Met Sally, Fisher also wrote four novels and three memoirs.

The BBC reports that a statement released on behalf of Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd by spokesperson Simon Halls said: “It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning. She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”
