Popular Kenyan musician released from Tanzanian jail, 8 others remain locked up

Popular Ohangla musician Lady Maureen has been released from a Tanzanian jail.

Lady Maureen, alongside 12 other members of her band, was sentenced to a one-year jail term in Mwanza last week for allegedly working in Tanzania without required permits.

The 13 were given an option of paying a fine of Ksh35, 000 each. The musicians did not have the money at the time.

Lady Maureen was released Wednesday evening (April 11) following efforts by fellow Ohangla musicians, friends and Kenyan politicians, who raised the needed money – Ksh35, 000.

According to popular Ohangla music producer and CEO of Barikiwa Studios Wuod Fibi, four other band members were also released from the Mwanza jail on Thursday, April 12.

A money-raising initiative has been launched to help secure the release of the other eight band members, who, collectively need Ksh280, 000.

Well-placed sources say Lady Maureen and her band members fell out with their Tanzanian promoter, who, in a bid to seek revenge, gave them away to Tanzanian authorities.

“Lady Maureen has, in the past, performed in Tanzania several times without being asked to show her work permit. This time round, she fell out with her promoter, who, in a bid to wreak revenge, told the police that Maureen and her band were working in Tanzania illegally. Maureen had been sentenced to one year in jail, but has since been released. Currently, we have launched a funds drive to raise the money needed to secure the release of the eight band members,” said the source.
