Popular Dancehall singer J Capri dies at 23

Popular Dancehall star J Capri, born Phillips Jordan, passed away early Friday morning while undergoing treatment at The University Hospital of the West Indies in Jamaica, says Jamaica’s Urban Islandz.

The website reports: “A representative for the “Boom and Bend Ova” singer confirmed her death telling us that she never woke from a medically induced coma.”

“She will be sadly missed, she had a promising future and a lot to contribute to Jamaican music,” said the rep.

The 23-year-old had been in an induced coma since last Monday, after her Mercedes Benz slammed into a wall and overturned on Barbican Road.

News of the artiste’s death Friday morning hit fans and the entertainment fraternity hard, against the background of earlier reports that doctors at the University Hospital of the West Indies, where the singer was hospitalised, believed she had great potential of full recovery.

Fellow female dancehall artiste Vanessa Saddler, who goes by the stage name Vanessa Bling, said she “woke up to a sad call”.

“It’s so sad to say good bye,” Saddler posted on social media. “I know your family is taking it hard right now… But I pray God will keep and protect them…May your soul rest in peace.”

Another female artiste Latifa Brown, better known, Tifa said: “Sing with the angels, doll”.

J Capri crashed her white Mercedes Benz C-Class on November 22 along Barbican Road in Kingston.

She was pulled from the wreckage by a group of good Samaritans who rushed her to the hospital. But she never recovered from her injuries.

She suffered several broken bones and a serious head injury as a result of the crash. Several Dancehall celebrities have visited her in the hospital and also donated blood on her behalf.

The Dancehall artiste rose to stardom in 2013 with a handful of hit collaborations with the likes of Konshens on “Pull Up To Mi Bumper” and Charly Black “Whine & Kotch.”

She has also done collaborations with Vybz Kartel and Demarco; as well as several solo hits including “Reverse It” and “Boom and Bend Ova.”

Capri has died aged 23; she would have celebrated her 24th birthday on December 24.
