Popular act in car battery advert among patients stranded in Mathari Hospital

A popular artist who starred in car battery advertisement is among patients who are stranded in Mathari Mental Hospital in Nairobi following the ongoing doctors’ and nurses’ strike.

The man was admitted to the mental health facility six months ago – and has since been discharged, but there is no family member who has approached administrators at the hospital requesting to take him home.

According to the health facility’s rules, a patient who has fully recovered from mental illness cannot be allowed to go home by himself.

The man’s wife and children – who were living in Maringo area in Eastlands, Nairobi – are currently putting up at her brother’s place in Karen area, Nairobi following the man’s hospitalisation.

On Tuesday, December 5, a major operation was launched after more than 100 mental patients escaped from Mathari Hospital over the ongoing doctors’ and nurses’ strike.

54 mental patients remain at large, says hospital administration.

Medics began strike on Monday, December 5, with Police firing teargas to disperse hundreds demonstrating over pay and conditions outside Afya House in Nairobi.

The medics were demanding that the government honours a 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement that would see them get a 300 percent pay rise among other benefits.
