Miss Tourism Kenya beauties brought Vihiga to a standstill Thursday, June 16.

The models arrived at Vihiga Municipal Grounds slightly past 1pm and residents who had attended a cultural expo at the venue were awed by the beauty of the 47 ladies.

The search for Kenya’s Miss Tourism officially kicked off with pomp and colour in Vihiga Wednesday, June 15.

In their colourful cultural outfits, all models looked effortlessly elegant. As they sashayed to the stalls that sheltered their county colleagues and cultural artifacts, the beauties captured full attention of the gathering – with quite a number of bold and smitten men asking to take selfies with the delectable women.

The cultural expo was presided over by Vihiga County Governor Moses Akaranga who expressed his appreciation to the organizers of Miss Tourism Kenya for taking the event to the county.

“Kenyans from different communities have turned up for the Miss Tourism Kenya event that is held here in Vihiga. That shows the love Kenyans have for one another – and I am glad the whole of Kenya representation is in Vihiga. Vihiga residents have warmly received the visitors,” said Mr Akaranga.

“I also thank the business community that has made today (Thursday, June 15) a success. We will make sure the visitors are protected and treated well,” promised the governor, adding: “Vihiga residents should use the opportunity to do business with the visitors. We should trade with them. The event also offers an opportunity for us to mingle, interact and exchange contacts with other Kenyans.”

Governor Akaranga says his intervention in reducing the entrance charges to the gala that will be held in Kidundu Stadium will enable many Vihiga residents to access the venue.

“Saturday will be the ultimate day. The event organizers had set entrance fee to the gala as KSh3, 000, but we said, no that is too much; let us reduce the charges to KSh500 which we did.”

Akaranga says top politicians and government administrators will attend Miss Tourism Kenya gala.

“We have invited Musalia Mudavadi, Eugene Wamalwa and Raila Odinga to the event – they have confirmed their attendance. In Vihiga, we receive every Kenyan,” said Akaranga.

The competitors are all positive they will win the pageantry. Mercy Bore, Miss Tourism Kericho County, says she expects to emerge victorious.

“My stay so far has been great. I expect a lot from the academy; not only before the finals, but also after the winner has been crowned. Every contestant must come with the urge to win – I believe I will walk home with the crown,” said the 21-year-old Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health student at the University of Kabiang’a.

Miss Tourism Kajiado County, Sation, says she felt honored to win the pageantry at county level

“I am looking forward to a very interesting show. Time at the academy has really been awesome, we are having fun. I will take home the crown,” said the 26-year-old Bachelor of Business Information Technology graduate from Kenya Methodist University.

The Miss Tourism models had arrived in Vihiga County last Friday and were received by Vihiga First Lady Elizabeth Akaranga at the County headquarters offices in Mbale.

The models were later invited to Governor Moses Akaranga’s residence, where they were addressed by the county executive.

The county Miss Tourism queens on Tuesday toured among other unique spots, Wegevere Rocks – rocks that are believed to have the footprints of Jesus.

The event will end on Saturday, June 18, when Miss Tourism Kenya 2016 will be crowned.
