A 42-year-old man, who had been admitted at Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital, died after he was attacked by a fellow patient on Friday night.

Roney Mutuma was fatally hit on the head by a blunt object in the hospital’s male ward.

The suspect, identified only as Paul, 48, was a hypertension and epilepsy patient at the hospital.

Laikipia County health minister, Dr. Joseph Lenai, said Paul “abruptly” turned violent and attacked Mutuma with a blunt metallic rod, and, thereafter, pursued 6 other patients, whom he hit, leaving them with injuries on their bodies.

Paul also attacked two nurses at the hospital before he was contained.

It remains unclear where Paul got the weapon from.

Doctors say the suspect’s aggressive behaviour could have been caused by an epileptic attack.

Mutuma’s father has urged the hospital’s administration to employ security guards, who can act swiftly, when such incidents happen.

Paul, who remains admitted at the hospital, has been placed in isolation in a separate room.

Mutuma’s body was moved to the health facility’s morgue.

Laikipia East OCPD Kizito Mutoro confirmed the incident.
