Owino freed on cash bail, judge issues warning to MP

Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino was on Thursday evening freed on a cash bail of Ksh200, 000 or a bond of Ksh500, 000 by Kibera Law Courts after pleading not guilty to charges of assaulting a voter, Joshua Otieno Obiende, at Soweto Social Hall in Embakasi East on August 8, 2017.

The court ruled that the prosecution did not produce satisfactory evidence showing the vocal MP will interfere with witnesses if granted a freedom.

“I am not convinced that he is a flight risk either. There is no mention that he absconded the trial of other matters,” said Kibera Chief Magistrate Joyce Gandani.

The magistrate warned Babu Owino that his bond will be cancelled if he absconds court or interferes with witnesses.

Meanwhile, tens of Owino’s supporters formed a human cordon around him to “protect the legislator from being re-arrested”, at a time his lawyers Otiende Amollo, Nelson Havi, James Orengo and Edwin Sifuna were processing the cash bail.

Some of his supporters, outside the court, chanted “no reforms, no elections”, as they waited for the MP.
