Why you must keep off lanes marked ‘Only BRT’ on Thika Superhighway

The Ministry of Transport has set aside a lane on Thika Superhighway to be used by high-capacity buses in decongestion efforts.

The Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NAMATA), on Thursday, April 5, started marking a section of Thika Superhighway, which will be used by high-capacity buses, ambulances and visiting dignitaries such as Presidents, Prime Ministers, and monarchs, among others.

Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia told Senate Committee on Roads and Transportation Thursday that the move will address traffic jam headache into Nairobi’s central business district.

The ‘BRT’ section will not be used by other public service vehicles and private cars.

This comes as the National Government plans to acquire 50 high-capacity buses.

Currently, public service buses run by the National Youth Service will use the ‘Only BRT’ lanes.

The NYS buses ply Kawangware-Nairobi CBD, Githurai-Nairobi CBD and Dandora-Nairobi CBD routes, among others.

Besides Thika Superhighway, NAMATA has mapped out four other routes including Jogoo Road, Mombasa Road and Outer Ring Road that will have the lanes reserved for buses.

In the city centre, NAMATA says, the bus rapid lanes will be constructed on roads like Haile Selassie, Moi Avenue, Kenyatta Avenue and University Way.

The adoption of the rapid transport model comes after NAMATA visited Dar es Salaam last December to study its bus rapid transit (BRT) system and noted several challenges such as tardiness in bus arrivals and departures.

Dar es Salaam became the first town in East Africa to launch a bus rapid transit system in 2016.
