A middle-aged woman was on Saturday arrested for performing fake spiritual rituals to residents of Gikumari location in Juja Constituency, Kiambu County.
Gikumari location chief, Joseph Ntwiga, says he has been receiving complaints from residents who claim the woman – a Murang’a native – has been scamming them out of their hard earned money.
Mr Ntwiga says the woman always carries with her goat and cow horns and a small frog put in a small ventilated bottle to deceive people into believing that she has supernatural powers.
According to complainants, the woman has been visiting their homes in pretense of offering prayers; and once done, she plants her paraphernalia at different spots in the house.
She would later return and claim that evil spirits that had descended and indwelled the occupants of the houses are responsible for their misfortunes. The woman would then demand to be paid at least KSh50, 000 for her revelation and cleansing services.
Mitikenda residents in Gikumari location are among the residents who have fallen prey to the woman’s deception, with some victims losing hundreds of thousands to the scam.
Chief Ntwiga has warned residents to be cautious and report such cases to authorities.
The woman is being held at Ruiru Police Station waiting to be arraigned in court once police conclude their investigations.
