A couple from Soroti District in the Eastern Region of Uganda has surprised many with their decision to hold a modest wedding with a budget of USh300, 000 (KSh8, 500), and do away with the “luxury” of a wedding convoy – and instead, walk nearly one kilometer to the wedding venue, says Daily Monitor.
The gesture, which many have perceived as humble, has attracted mixed reactions online.
Ruhindi Ambrose wrote on Facebook: “Marriage is not by how much you have used or how many cows you have slaughtered or how many cars escorted you, but it’s a heart knot tying act and done on one’s free will!”
Ronnie Nathan said: “And they have done the good thing… Why spend too much on wedding yet you are not so sure you will spend the rest of your life with her?”
Rhonics Ronnie commented: “To me this is the marriage and couple of the year. That’s what they call real love; not like the marriage ceremonies we see these days, people spend a lot and (their marriages) last only few months or years, with some people even ending up committing suicide because of the amount of money they had spent on their wedding.”
Same Real Real said: “They walked because they didn’t have finances. Seriously, why should l walk when l have cars in the pack yard? Seriously, everyone has to work hard for their better future. This couple did that because they didn’t have sufficient finances, but if l have then why should I walk? It is my day, only one day in life; why can’t I spend what l have been working for, why can’t I enjoy it?”
