The Members of County Assembly in Nyeri County were beaten by irate residents on Monday, May 30 for derailing Governor Nderitu Gachagua’s agenda.
The MCAs who had attended a residents meeting at Mbiriri grounds were clobbered shortly before Governor Gachagua’s arrival.
Residents accuse the MCAs of sabotaging Gachagua’s development agenda. The County chief claims that the MCAs are selfish and want to be awarded tenders to service County facilities contrary to law.
Mbiriri grounds turned into a battlefield between the MCAs and residents who exchanged blows and kicks in full glare of cameras.
Police were forced to intervene when the mayhem escalated to uncontrollable levels. The MCAs were forced to flee for safety as the enraged residents overpowered them.
The county lawmakers accused Governor Gachagua of hiring goons to beat them up.
“There are people who have whips around their waist and have been told to come intimidate Members of County Assembly,” Wangama ward MCA Jesse Mwangi said.
His sentiments were echoed by Kabaru ward MCA Gituanja Kiara.
The governor, nonetheless, refutes the MCAs’ allegations.
“I understand there was small fracas in the morning. Some MCAs came to disrupt this meeting. That is old type politics we do not want,” Governor Gachagua said.
Gachagua was at Mbiriri grounds to launch the rehabilitation of local roads.
