BY JULIUS JOHO IN TAITA TAVETA COUNTY.
Taita Taveta’s Chawia Member of County Assembly Frank Kichohi has promised to give every woman who will get pregnant Ksh2, 500.
Mr Kichohi argues that the numbers of children enrolling for nursery education in the ward are too low, and he believes his initiative will help boost population growth in Chawia.
The MCA had initially promised to give pregnant women Ksh1, 000 but his programme flopped, forcing him to double the offer.
Activists in the area have come out to oppose Mr Kichohi’s initiative, saying it is misleading the public into having a higher number of children than they can manage to raise comfortably.
Citing an example of a primary school in Chawia which has a total pupils’ population of 96, the MCA blames the “low population” on adoption of family planning schemes by area residents.
