A man — said to be in his 40s — was rescued after he threw himself into the Indian Ocean in Mombasa on Thursday morning (February 14).
The reason(s) for his action remain unknown, though he was heard saying: “I want to kill myself”.
Witnesses say the man jumped into the water body after deliberating for a while on top of Nyali Bridge.
The 10am incident prompted rescuers into action.
He was retrieved 100 meters away from the shore, which residents familiar with the depth of the ocean, say was deep end.
Some of the onlookers, however, claim that the man is skilled in swimming, given he managed to float, with his head clearly visible from afar.
Red Cross officials arrived at the scene and rushed him to Coast General Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
Police say they have launched an investigation into the incident.
