A 20-year-old man from Mugumo-Ini Village in Mwea East Sub-County, Kirinyaga County has been arrested on suspicion of killing a 14-year-old girl, who he “got married to” last Sunday, February 25.
According to village elders led by Roseline Wanjiru, the suspect tied the knot with the now-deceased after attempt to kill his first wife ended unsuccessfully. It is alleged the suspect attempted to set his first wife on wife, though she was rescued before sustaining serious burns.
The body of the 14-year-old girl was found hanging on a rope from the eaves of the suspect’s house on Thursday night (March 1).
When the suspect was questioned, Ms Wanjiru says he was at pains explaining what led to the teenager’s death. It is alleged the man killed the girl before putting her neck on a rope tied to the eaves of the house so as to suggest that the girl had committed suicide.
Administration Police officers rescued the suspect before residents could lynch him.
Ms Wanjiru says the man was in a relationship with two other girls aged 15 and 16.
The man reportedly picked the three girls, who were neighbours, from their village and locked them up in his house.
The 14-year-old girl’s body was moved to Kerugoya Level Four Hospital.
The deceased’s family members claim the suspect has ruined the lives of many underage girls in the village. The girls, he allegedly dated, have since dropped out of school due to pregnancies.
The remaining teenagers and the suspect are being held at Wang’uru Police Station as investigations into the death of the 14-year-old girl continue.
Mwea East OCPD Kizito Mutoro confirmed the incident.
