Man in court for stealing food worth Ksh600, 000

A middle-aged man was on Tuesday, October 3 charged with stealing food procured by Samburu County Government valued at Ksh600, 000.

Peter Sambaya was arraigned before Maralal Resident Magistrate, Abrahamu Gachie, for allegedly stealing several bags of rice.

Sambaya, who is the driver of a lorry that had been hired to transport the bags of rice from Nairobi to Maralal between September 21 and September 25, vanished with the cargo before it could reach its destination.

Sambaya pleaded not guilty to the food theft charges, and asked the judge to free him, saying: “there was no one who could help him with the case”.

The prosecution, however, opposed Sambaya’s request, saying if he is released on a free bail, it would be difficult to trace the suspect, given “no one knows where he lives”.

Maralal Resident Magistrate Abrahamu Gachie released the suspect on a Ksh300, 000 bond, and two sureties of Ksh300, 000 each.

The case will be mentioned on October 16 and heard on November 9, 2017.
