Man in court for breaking into Chinese man’s house, stealing money & property worth millions

A middle-aged man was arraigned in a Mombasa court on Thursday, and charged with stealing money and property worth Ksh2.23 million belonging to a Chinese national.

The court heard that the suspect, Laban Leonard Okwacha, and another Kenyan man, who did not appear in court, broke into Zhou Lin’s house in Kizingo, Mombasa on March 9, 2019 and stole a safe containing Ksh1.7 million in cash, $1, 000 (Ksh102, 000), 20, 000 Chinese Yuan (Ksh297, 000), and jewellery.

All the money and property totaled to Ksh2.23 million.

Okwacha, who denied the charge, was freed on a bond of Ksh1 million and a surety of a similar amount.

The case will be heard on June 27.
