Michael Owino – who is accused of stabbing his father Dr Michael Amollo 18 times and killing him – caused quite a stir at Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, May 11 when he appeared before Justice Jessy Lesiit.

Dr Amollo was allegedly stabbed by Mr Owino on April 17 at Bandari Villas, in South C Estate.

Dr Amollo died on May 2 – about 14 months after his wife Monica Amollo, the Homa Bay County acting ODM Chairperson, died in a road accident.

On Wednesday, Mr Owino did not plead to charges of murder after Lady Justice Lesiit cast doubt on his mental stability.

The judge instead ordered the prosecution to present the accused to Mathare Mental Hospital to establish his mental health following his court drama.

Mr Owino baffled the court when he interjected the prosecutor Catherine Mwaniki who was reading his charges – and said he needed no lawyer to represent him in court as he is a qualified lawyer – hence he is capable of defending himself.

Owino added – based on that technicality – there was no complainant in the case; therefore it should be thrown out.

When journalists began taking his photos, he posed and smiled at the cameras – making the court session look like a photo shoot.

In several instances, Mr Owino ignored police directions.

Mr Owino’s drama went on despite the prosecution telling the court that the accused had been mentally assessed and was found fit to face trial.

The case will be mentioned on June 8, 2016 when Lady Justice Jessy Lesiit would have obtained the doctor’s report on Mr Owino’s mental health.

The judge will thereafter set a date when the accused will be arraigned in court to plead to charges leveled against him.
