Luo elders cleanse legendary python Omieri

Elders from the Luo community on Wednesday held a cleansing exercise for legendary python Omieri.

The remains of Omieri were brought to Kisumu for a five-day cultural event by the Kenya National Cultural Celebration for UNESCO at the Kenyatta Sports ground. The cultural celebrations kicked off on Wednesday and are set to run until Sunday September 19, 2018.

Omieri will then be returned to Nyakach before being brought back to the Kenya National Museum where it has been preserved since it died over 30 years ago.

Omieri has previously been claimed to have ‘powers’ to turn minerals into loose sand, dry up water sources or even prevent outsiders from accessing local catchment areas in the Luo community.

The famous python died in 1987 while receiving treatment in Nairobi from burns caused by wild fire in Nyakach hills.

It remains popular among Luo traditionalists who believe it had mysterious power that affected the lives of the community. They regarded is as goddess of rain, harvest and well being of the Luo people.
