Lil Kim: Being black wasn’t good enough

To say her fans reacted to her new look is an understatement.

Rapper Lil’ Kim posted an image on Instagram over the weekend and her fans called her out almost immediately.

She is practically unrecognizable from her previous self and many of her fans are accusing Lil Kim of skin bleaching.

An undated interview with the iconic rapper has now surfaced online and it demystifies Lil Kim’s main motivation for skin whitening. Lil Kim says men cheated on her with white women.

“All my life men have told me I wasn’t pretty enough – even the men I was dating. And I’d be like, ‘Well, why are you with me, then?’

“I have low self-esteem and I always have. Guys always cheated on me with women who were European-looking. You know the long-hair type. Really beautiful women that left me thinking, ‘How I can I compete with that?’ Being a regular black girl wasn’t good enough,” said Lil Kim.

Online users reacted differently to Lil Kim’s Instagram images with many being less diplomatic, making cruel jokes about the star’s appearance; others claimed to feel sorry for Kim.

The reality is that the star has never shied away from discussing her experiences under the knife. Her 2005 hit “Shut Up [expletive]” was a response to an industry that placed disproportionate emphasis on her appearance.

Furthermore, a heartfelt interview with The Source magazine revealed that facial reconstruction surgery was a necessary measure after she suffered domestic abuse that left lasting damage:

“I came out of the hospital from getting my nose done and he broke my [expletive] again… I had to have MRIs because he beat me so bad I couldn’t move.” Kim’s harrowing experiences motivated her to start her own charity which aims to raise funds for victims of domestic abuse.

Despite the justifiable reasons surrounding her cosmetic surgery, Lil Kim has long been a victim of mainstream harassment due to her appearance.

Back in 2013, chat show host Wendy Williams burst into laughter when she saw a photo of the star’s face, leading to a Twitter feud.

It seems that, even in her 40s, Kim is still held to unrealistic beauty standards and still has her appearance subjected to top-heavy levels of scrutiny.
