A couple from Cherota Village in Keiyo Sub-County in Elgeyo-Marakwet County is counting losses after lightning struck their house and destroyed property of unknown value on Wednesday dawn, just two days after the two had tied the knot.
The young family lost every chattel in the house, including their wedding gifts, as the whole structure was razed to the ground.
According to Muyeng arap Cherono, a village elder in Cherota, the couple escaped the dawn lightning incident unscathed as they were away on honeymoon.
Judith Jepkorir, the newlywed, said the incident has depressed her, adding that she did not believe it when her neighbours broke the news to her.
According to one witness, Kenneth Lagat, the council of elders in Elgeyo-Marakwet should perform cleansing rituals on the newlyweds, saying that the incident is a sign of bad omen likely to befall the couple.
