Larry Madowo exits Daily Nation, Kenyans react

NTV journalist Larry Madowo on Monday terminated his contract of writing for the Daily Nation newspaper.

Before his exit, Madowo who also hosts the popular political show Sidebar, had been a contributor to the paper for close to four years, penning the (in)famous Front Row column.

“On Thursday, I terminated my contract to write the #FrontRow column in the @dailynation. It was an honour & I’m grateful to the paper for the page since August 2014,” reads a post on the TV personality’s Twitter account.

His exit comes in the wake of the paper declining to publish a story he had submitted titled, ‘Why it is perilous to be a journalist in Kenya.”

In the article, which was later published by CNN, Madowo writes about the recent cases of attacks on media houses in Kenya in which the country’s three main television stations – Citizen TV, NTV and KTN News – were shut down two weeks ago for covering the opposition ‘swearing-in’ ceremony.

Madowo, and fellow Nation Media Group reporter Ken Mijungu and General Manager Linus Kaikai had previously been forced to spend a night at Nation Centre fearing arrest amid a government crackdown after the controversial swearing in of Raila Odinga as the ‘People’s President’.

High Court Justice Luka Kimaru, however later extended orders barring the National Police Service from arresting or harassing the three.

Below are samples of reactions from Kenyans on Madowo’s move:
