A 20-year-old man from Butere in Kakamega County was on Monday afternoon (February 19) arrested on suspicion of raping a 16-year-old girl.
The suspect, Obwamu Abuko, allegedly tricked the girl, who studies in Uganda, into believing he could pay her school fees; and asked her to visit him at his house in Bubala sub-location in Butere Constituency, where he allegedly defiled and impregnated her.
Bubala assistant chief Amos Alwang’a said the girl had visited her relatives in the area, when the incident happened.
Abuko is being held at the Butere Police Station as investigations into the alleged rape continue.
Alwang’a said, once investigations are concluded, the suspect will be arraigned and charged with statutory rape.
The area administrator urged parents to report suspected rape incidents, or when adults prey on young girls and boys.
“When the guardians do that, such cases will reduce in number,” he said.
