A Second Year student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) main campus in Juja, Kiambu County was shot dead Wednesday night by unknown assailants.
The 20-year-old was pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Information Technology.
The vicenarian was fatally shot after an altercation ensued between him and his aggressors who tried to confiscate a laptop he was carrying.
After several minutes of resistance, the two-man gang grew impatient with the student and pulled the trigger on him.
The incident took place at Oasis – an area near JKUAT main campus.
According to JKUSO student leader Anyungu Wangungu, the deceased was heading to his hostel room after night preps when the gang emerged from a nearby thicket and pounced on him.
While confirming the incident, Juja OCPD Patricia Nasio said the student was pronounced dead on arrival at the JKUAT Hospital where he was rushed for emergency treatment.
Ms Nasio said the next of kin were informed about their relation’s death. They are expected to formally give the go-ahead for a post mortem to be conducted on the deceased.
Investigations have since been launched into the murder.
JKUSO secretary general Joel Onono has urged both levels of government to provide adequate security to students, saying crime incidents have nearly doubled in the area as thugs continue to target students with laptops.
They have further urged local leaders to erect street lights in areas surrounding the university.
