Renowned author Binyavanga Wainaina has written a suggestive post on Twitter, saying “I am HIV positive and happy”.
His followers took to his timeline to commend him for embracing positive living.
Linda Adongo said: “@BinyavangaW proud of you. I hope the rest of the public can also come out spreading positive vibes like you do.”
Nnedi Okorafor wrote: “This writer, Binyavanga Wainaina, knows how to get you to sit down, shut up and think. One of the bravest most audacious people I know.”
Mama Yao said: “@BinyavangaW way to go. Please scream it from the house tops. HIV is not a death sentence; unless, of course, you let it.”
KamauGatwechi wrote: “@BinyavangaW you’ll counter the virus with your positive attitude.”
The Star Kenya reports that a close confidant confirmed that the Twitter update is indeed an HIV status declaration by Binyavanga Wainaina, who is currently in Germany.
“It is true that is his twitter handle. Even of his Facebook page he said the same statement. He decided to make public his status so as to create awareness among many victims feeling stigmatized,” the confidant said as quoted by the Star.
Binyavanga Wainaina had in January 2014 publicly announced that he is gay.
Binyavanga Wainaina, 45, won the Caine Prize for African Writing in 2002 for his short story “Discovering Home”.
In 2003, he was given an award by the Kenya Publisher’s Association, in recognition of his services to Kenyan literature.
