I was used, says ‘Salome’ hit-maker Saida Karoli

Legendary Tanzanian songstress Saida Karoli says her management used her to make themselves rich – and after achieving their mission, they left her to wallow in poverty.

Speaking to Tanzania’s Jembe FM, Saida Karoli – who is known for seasoned hits such as Salome, Mapenzi Kizunguzungu, Kitobero among others –, said she fears subscribing to artiste management services because her not so good experience with them is still fresh in her mind.

“There are good promoters in the industry like Diamond Platnumz’s promoter and manager. Ali Kiba’s manager and promoter are equally good. There are people (managers and promoters) whom I fear. Back in my days I did so well musically but not financially. They made me fear artistes’ management to an extent where if I get one today, I must scrutinize him well – just to know how the artistes that he managed are faring,” she said.

“My stage name is bigger than what I own. I was used. I was hurt since the beginning. I got very little from album sales of my music. If journalists can visit my place and see the deplorable condition I am living in, Tanzanians would open their eyes (and see the exploitation artistes are exposed to),” said Karoli.

Saida Karoli is currently living in Mwanza after relocating from Dar es Salaam nine years ago.

Saida Karoli’s repute in music was reincarnated after Diamond Platnumz released a cover of her popular song Salome, which is currently sweeping the airwaves.

25 percent of total revenue

Diamond Platnumz last month revealed that he paid Saida Karoli cash and 25 percent of total proceeds from the song (Salome) will go to the latter.

In an interview with Clouds FM, Diamond Platnumz confirmed that he got permission to do a rendition of the song.
