Hundreds of women from Kenya’s Masaai community travelled to Namanga in Kenya-Tanzania border Friday to protest against their husband’s excessive indulgence in alcohol in the neighbouring country, says Mwananchi newspaper.
It is alleged that the men have formed the habit of permeating into Tanzania where they purchase cheap liquor.
Longido District Commissioner, Daniel Chongolo, confirmed the incident, saying the women on transit allege their husbands have abandoned domestic responsibilities.
“Some women claim that their husbands have married other wives in Tanzania’s Longido area,” Said Mr Chongolo.
The administrator however says the women’s actions were against the law as their protests resulted in destruction of property of unknown value.
“They (protestors) acknowledged their mistakes and have since apologised,” said Mr Chongolo.
The district administrator says a committee has been put up to investigate the incident.
In another meeting attended by the rioting women and Kajiado County Governor David Nkedianye, the demonstrating women accepted to return to Kenya.
Chongolo has banned drinking of alcohol during the day in his area of administration; saying until the ban is imposed, Kenyan men would continue to infiltrate Tanzania for cheaper alcohol alternatives.
He further warned Tanzanian women from keeping Kenyan men in their homes, arguing it interferes with the peaceful co-existence between citizens of the two nations.
