How family tricked married woman, attempted to forcefully circumcise her

A 21-year-old married woman was on Sunday, November 13, assaulted and ejected from family after she declined to undergo female genital mutilation at Ramananyaki Village in Kuria East Sub-County, Migori County.

The woman namely Lydia Nyanokwi said she was on the verge of undergoing forceful circumcision when her father and police rescued her.

Narrating the ordeal to eDaily, Ms Nyanokwi said her husband’s family called for a meeting that had secretly been planned to forcefully circumcise her.

She said her husband, a medical doctor, demanded during the meeting that she must undergo the cut lest he divorce her.

Scared of undergoing the cut, Ms Nyanwoki attempted to escape but was cornered by her husband’s family.

Neighbours alerted authorities who came to the rescue of Ms Nyanwoki before she could undergo forceful circumcision.

Lydia says her husband’s family had in recent past been bugging him to ensure his wife gets circumcised.

In August 2016, Lydia said she was assaulted by her husband’s family over her stand against FGM.

Ms Nyanwoki has urged relevant bodies to help her get justice.

Her mother Christine Robi said none of her daughters has undergone FGM and vows not to allow them (daughters) to undergo the cut.

Meanwhile, a court in Kehancha on Monday slapped the five suspects arrested with a bond amounting to KSh500, 000 each.

The circumcisers, who are among twelve people arrested by the police during an anti-FGM crackdown, appeared before Justice George Sagero.

The case is scheduled for hearing on December 22, 2016
