Kevin Spacey is out of the House. The House of Cards star and executive producer will not return for season six, which had just begun filming when allegations of sexual assault and misconduct made headlines.
Actor Kevin Spacey is the latest celebrity to face allegations of sexual abuse in the fallout of the Harvey Weinstein revelations.
Discovery actor Anthony Rapp came forward with allegations against House of Cards star Kevin Spacey, telling Buzz Feed that Spacey sexually assaulted him when Rapp was 14 years old.
Shortly thereafter, Spacey responded to the allegations in a statement. He wrote,
“I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”
But then, he went on to do something unusual: He used the last half of the statement to come out as gay.
“I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man,” he declared.
Beau Willimon, a creator of “House of Cards” who left the series in 2016, said that he found Mr Rapp’s allegations “deeply troubling.”
“During the time I worked with Kevin Spacey on ‘House of Cards’ I neither witnessed nor was aware of any inappropriate behaviour on set or off,” he said in a statement he posted on Twitter. “That said, I take reports of such behaviour seriously, and this is no exception. I feel for Mr Rapp and I support his courage.”
After revealing that House of Cards, Netflix’s first and longest-running original drama series, would end in 2018 with its sixth season, Netflix and House of Cards production studio Media Rights Capital have since suspended production to look into the newly reported sexual harassment and assault allegations against star Kevin
Mr Spacey played the lead character in “House of Cards” since it debuted in 2013, starring alongside Robin Wright and also serving as an executive producer.
The political thriller was a breakthrough for Netflix, just as it was starting its efforts into producing original programming and offering subscribers an opportunity to watch an entire season of a new series in one fell swoop.
Mr Spacey’s over-the-top performance as Frank Underwood has earned him five Emmy Award nominations.
The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which presents the International Emmy Awards, announced that it would not honour Mr Spacey with a founder’s award, which was to be bestowed at the International Emmy Awards Gala on November 20.
