Former Mumias Member of Parliament (MP) Francis Makwanalo Obongita has died aged 85.
Mr Obongita succumbed to diabetes at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu on Thursday morning (May 11).
Mr Obongita served as the then-Mumias Constituency MP for two terms. He left office in 1978.
In a previous interview with Citizen Digital, Mr Obongita urged the Luhya community to maintain unity if they would want to realise their dream of leading the nation.
He also applauded Kenyans for endorsing the 2010 Constitution, urging leaders in the county governments to ensure that the constituents benefit from devolution.
Mr Obongita hails from Malaha Village in Mumias East, Kakamega County. He was the third MP of Mumias Constituency after Ibrahim Mulama (first) and John Washika (second).
Mr Obongita ventured into politics in 1963. During his stint in politics, he served as minister for local government and administration.
Prior to joining politics, he had served in the army.
