A Form One student at Secheno Secondary School in Shinyalu, Kakamega County has been arrested after she dumped her one-and-a-half year old baby in River Lukose before attempting to commit suicide by ingesting poison Tuesday, November 7.
The baby was carried away by the stream and is yet to be found, police said.
The girl was rescued and rushed to hospital, where she was treated and discharged, but police arrested her shortly thereafter.
The student is said to have differed with her lover, who is the baby’s father. The girl’s boyfriend is a Form Two student.
Kakamega police boss Tito Kilonzi says an investigation into the incident has been launched.
Preliminary findings show that the fall-out stemmed from a suggestion the girl gave to her lover, urging him to look for a place where they’d live together because her parents were increasingly “frustrating” her for giving birth while still a minor.
“The girl will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded,” said Kilonzi.
