A middle-aged man was on Wednesday, August 30 arraigned on terrorism related charges, involving a conspiracy targeting the Standard Gauge Railway Miritini terminus.

Kristen Kishombe, a Malawian national, was arrested on Monday, August 28 at the Miritini terminus in possession of a map of the facility. Police suspected he was using the map to plan terrorism acts.

The court heard that Kishombe refused to leave the Miritini terminus, several minutes after reaching his destination.

Kishombe pleaded not guilty to the charges, telling the court that he was a footballer from Malawi, who was trying to find his way after arriving in Mombasa.

The suspect further claimed he had been given permission to take pictures of the terminus by a security officer manning the facility.

High Court judge Julius Nang’ea ordered that Kishombe be detained at the Port Police in Kilindini as investigations continue.

The case will be mentioned on September 7, 2017.
