A traffic police officer died on Monday night while receiving treatment at a Kisumu hospital after she was hit by a speeding vehicle.
The traffic officer, who was on duty alongside her colleagues, was knocked down by a matatu belonging to Bungoma Line SACCO at Kisian area on Kisumu-Busia road.
The traffic officer had tried to stop the matatu, which was coming from Busia town, but the driver ignored her call, instead hitting the officer and driving on.
Confirming the incident, Nyanza Police Coordinator, Willy Lugusa, said the officer sustained serious injuries following the accident, and was rushed to Port Florence clinic before being referred to Avenue Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Mr Lugusa revealed that the driver of the killer matatu, upon realising he was being trailed, escaped, leaving the matatu behind with passengers on board just before reaching Kisumu.
The matatu was towed to Kisumu Central police station. The police boss says authorities have received vital information that will lead to the killer driver’s arrest.
The body of the traffic police officer was taken to Jaramogi Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
