Ezekiel Mutua bans DJ Afro’s movies from airing on local TV stations

Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) CEO Dr Ezekiel Mutua has announced the banning of DJ Afro’s audio-visual content on television.

DJ Afro, whose real name is James Muigai, is known for reworking on movie storylines, and tailoring them for a Swahili audience.

The choice of his words, when narrating the visual content, have – in several instances –, been regarded as “gross” by a section of audiences.

And now KFCB boss Dr Mutua has taken action against the entertainer.

“Today [Wednesday, September 12] KFCB management met with the controversial James Muigai aka DJ Afro, his promoter and manager following our banning of his unpalatable content aired on Gikuyu TV and also distributed by unscrupulous business people and exhibited in public places without approval by the Board,” said Dr Mutua on Facebook.

“DJ Afro admitted the illegality of his actions and took responsibility for the same, while pointing out that the content being distributed and exhibited across the country is illegal reproduction of his works done many years ago.

“It was agreed that the Board will communicate its position to the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government to have the culprits arrested and the illegal material destroyed, and that Gikuyu TV will suspend forthwith the airing of unrated material.

“All content generated by DJ Afro will be submitted for examination and classification for age suitability,” said Dr Mutua.

A section of online users, however, faulted Dr Mutua’s decision to ban DJ Afro’s audio-visual content.

Facebook user whose name is John Irungu said: “Mr Mutua, that is not the way. Leave Kimonda alone; he is using his talent to earn a living.”

Faith Jayden said: “I think there should be another way. Will the ban not kill talents?”
